Of the
four fitness centers where I have been a member, the Balch Street Athletic
Club is at the bottom of the list. The others have had aerobics classes,
spinning, childcare, multiple racquetball courts, late hours, etc. The best
compliment one can pay the Balch Street A.C is that is adequate.
This morning, in a rare moment of ambition, I went to play
racquetball before work. Having missed the really early risers, but before
the stay-at-home moms come in, the gym is usually quiet at that time. The main
advantage is that I can avoid showering with a room full of sweaty men.
Contrary to rumor, this makes me uncomfortable.
Today I went to the 2nd floor racquetball court and discovered
it was locked. I went to the front desk and asked the attendant to come and
unlock it for me. A few minutes later she arrived upstairs with about 3
pounds of keys and unlocked it. She explained:
"We locked it because on Wednesdays, we have the Rain Tree
Drug Free Program here, and they like to come in here and have sex. [and as
if it required further explanation] Because it’s so secluded."
I thought it smelled funny in there.
